Penrith is one of Sydney’s largest municipalities. The City has emerged as the major administrative, retail, educational, health and cultural centre for Outer Western Sydney and Central Western NSW.
Industry in Penrith Valley is diverse, and whist still reliant to some degree on agriculture and horticulture it has moved rapidly towards a range of secondary industries, education, tourism and other services.
Small enterprise continues to drive business across most of the sectors with 62 percent of business turning over less than $100,000 per annum.
The key industries by turnover size are construction, property and business services, retail trade and manufacturing. However the industry sectors with the highest number of jobs are retail trade, manufacturing, health and community services and education.

The University of Western Sydney, Western Sydney Institute of TAFE and the Nepean Hospital are key economic assets providing a platform for nurturing future knowledge based research and industry development.
Penrith also has major cultural facilities, such as the renowned Dame Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre that employ, train and entertain the local population.

Primary Industry
- The number of primary industry businesses is 1,167 providing employment to 660 people or just over one percent of all jobs in Penrith Valley.
- Plant nurseries, vegetable and crop growing, poultry farming (eggs) and services to agriculture dominate primary industry.
- Metal, sand and gravel continue to be the major extractive industries.
Secondary Industry
- Construction sector has the highest number of business entities (6,358) in Penrith Valley followed by manufacturing (2,353).
- Total employment provided by the two sectors is more than 10,500 with manufacturing alone contributing to some 15 percent of all jobs in Penrith Valley.
- The principal manufacturing activities include metal fabrication, furniture and wood products, glass and glass products, electronic equipment manufacturing, milk and milk processing and medicinal and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- The principal construction activities include house construction, electrical and plumbing services and concreting services.
Tertiary Industry
- 60 percent of Penrith Valley businesses belong to the service and related industries accounting for over three-quarters of employment in Penrith Valley.
- There are 3,220 retail and wholesale trading businesses and they account for the greatest number of jobs (24 percent).
- Health and community services contribute to 5,800 jobs followed by education with 4,880 jobs. They are the third and fourth largest employers in the Penrith Valley.
- Community services, health care, tourism,education and the arts will continue
to be the main areas of growth in the services sector.
